Students who type lecture notes record more words than students writing by hand, which sounds like an advantage. Typing is fast enough to transcribe a lecture almost verbatim, and a verbatim record requires no decisions. Writing by hand is slow, so the student must judge continuously what is worth keeping and how to compress it, and that judging is itself a form of processing. In tests of understanding a week later, the slower method has generally produced the better results.
