Platform work is usually described as offering flexibility, and for some people it genuinely does: a driver or a courier can decide not to work on a given morning without asking anyone. The flexibility is one-sided, however. The platform sets the price of each job, decides which jobs a worker is offered, and can deactivate an account without the process that a dismissal would require. Workers control when they work, in other words, while the company controls almost everything else about it.
