Tourism brings money to places that have little other industry, but the money does not always stay. When visitors book through international companies and sleep in foreign-owned hotels, most of what they spend leaves the country before it reaches local households. Studies of small island destinations have found that under a third of tourist spending remains in the local economy. Communities that run their own guesthouses and tours keep a far larger share, although they struggle to reach the travellers who book everything before they arrive.
