Birthday customs differ considerably from one country to another. In some places the person having the birthday pays for the entire meal, while in others the guests would be positively insulted to be allowed to. Candles on a cake are usual across Europe, but long noodles, a bowl of sweet soup or a particular preparation of rice appear elsewhere, and communicate exactly the same thing. What all these customs share is the idea of marking the day with food of some description.
