Eating together has become considerably harder to arrange than it was. Parents finish work at different hours, children have evening classes and clubs, and it is remarkably easy for everybody to end up eating alone in front of a separate screen in a different room. A great many families now protect one or two evenings a week instead of attempting to eat together every single day, and they find a smaller promise very much easier to keep.
