In a great many streets a small group of neighbours quietly does work that nobody is paid for. They sweep the pavement, water the plants at the corner and call on older residents who live alone, particularly during a cold week. None of it takes very long, but a street where these things happen looks and feels noticeably different from a street where they do not, and the difference is obvious within a minute of walking down it.
