A great many museums are free to enter, and have been for years. They earn their money instead from the café, the shop and special exhibitions, for which visitors buy a separate ticket at a separate desk. Free entry changes the way people use the building: a family can come in for an hour, look properly at two or three rooms and leave again without the uncomfortable feeling that they have wasted the price of a ticket.
