Cooking at home is usually cheaper than eating out, but the first month is much the hardest. A kitchen needs a few basic things — oil, salt, rice and one sharp knife — and buying them all in the same week feels uncomfortably expensive. After that initial outlay most meals cost very little indeed, since the same bottle of oil lasts for months, and whatever is left over can become the following day's lunch instead of going into the bin.
