A garden is not necessary in order to grow a useful quantity of vegetables. Herbs, salad leaves and tomatoes all grow perfectly well in pots on a balcony, provided that they receive several hours of direct sun every day. The soil in a pot dries out considerably faster than the ground does, however, so pots have to be watered more often than a bed of the same size, sometimes twice a day in the middle of summer.
