Choosing the right clothes for the weather sounds perfectly straightforward, yet a great many people get it wrong every winter. In cold conditions several thin layers keep a person warmer than a single thick overcoat, because air is trapped between the layers and gradually warmed by the body. Wearing a hat matters as well, since a surprising amount of heat escapes through an uncovered head, and almost none of these precautions costs anything at all to follow.
