Buses remain the cheapest available method of crossing most cities: a single ticket costs less than the shortest taxi ride, and a monthly pass reduces the price considerably further for anyone travelling every day. Buses also carry the passengers of twenty cars in the road space of three or four, which keeps the streets appreciably clearer for everybody else. Their weakness is time: a bus stops every few hundred metres, and it cannot escape the traffic it is sitting in.
