A great many adults never learned to swim as children, and most of them feel faintly embarrassed about admitting it. Pools in several towns now run classes for adults only, held early in the morning or late in the evening when the water is quiet and no families are watching from the side. The teachers begin in the shallow end and spend the whole of the first lesson on nothing more ambitious than helping nervous beginners to relax and float.
